Safe Roads — Throughout PA
The most recent Regional/Rural Active Transportation Workshop was held in Northumberland County in the SEDA-Council of Government’s MPO (Metropolitan Planning Organization) region on Friday, March 20. It will take place in the training facility at the CSIU (Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit) on the border of Milton and Montandon. The program was offered by the PA Department of Health WalkWorks Program in collaboration with the PennDOT Connects and Local Technical Assistance Program. Attendees learned about what active transportation is, how it is important for public health and what options there are for communities to design, fund, build, and activate infrastructure that enables people to walk and bike safely to everyday destinations.
It’s a great way to learn how municipalities in Northumberland County and beyond can support and improve functional walking and biking options.
Program partners for this event included WalkWorks, SEDA-Council of Governments Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Pennsylvania Downtown Center, the PennDOT Connects and Local Technical Assistance Programs, the Susquehanna Greenway Partnership, Northumberland County Planning, the CSIU, Geisinger, and WellSpan Evangelical Community Hospital.

Presentation slides are available from the past iterations of this event in Kane in 2023, Mansfield in 2024, Sharon in 2025, Montandon in 2026. The first two events were done with a different mix of partners and presenters, but were closely related. Each region’s presentations are updated and adjusted for the location — and the networking and interactions and presentations themselves are not adequately conveyed simply by the slides. Schedule a workshop for your region in order to get the most of of the program!
